Falconry Bird Deterrent - Our hawks are not used to kill pigeons and other pest birds, but merely to act as a deterrent. Pigeons are smart birds and they quickly learn that artificial bird deterrents, such as sonic devices, warning calls and predator models offer no threat. Show them a real bird-of-prey and it's a different story! Our trained falconers fly hawks directly toward a flock of pigeons, scaring them away. The pigeons quickly learn to associate the area with danger, thus an effective no fly zone is created. Our hawks are not used to kill pigeons, but merely to act as a deterrent.

Deterring pest birds using falconry response is ideal for:

• A natural method of bird control utilizing nature’s instincts

• Clearing large sites of nuisance bird populations

• Operating in urban areas where bird proofing methods are unsuitable – shopping centres, railway stations, flats, towns and cities.

Why use falconry response as bird control instead of bird proofing?

• Sometimes bird proofing isn’t an option. The building may be listed or the size of the building could make proofing impractical, but this is something that can be determined during your free survey. You may have nuisance birds in an open area, such as a landfill or farmland, where proofing is just not possible. This is when we would use falconry response as an extremely effective method of control.

• Our experienced falconers and specially trained birds of prey deter nuisance birds from a range of sites including schools, hospitals, shopping centres, train stations and depots, factories, landfill sites, government buildings and large public spaces.

• This is a non-lethal deterrent programme, a natural and effective measure, where the aim is not to kill, but to deter. The public is supportive of our method and our clients benefit from positive public relations by dealing with the problems caused by nuisance birds in a humane and responsible way.

Haven Falconry will conduct, free of charge, a survey of the problems caused by nuisance birds at your site. Taking into account factors such as the availability of food and roosting or nesting sites, we will design a bird control strategy to suit your requirements, and achieve the absolute minimum of bird activity within your budget.

We select the type of bird of prey to use based on the site and the target species. For urban situations we typically fly Harris’ hawks, both male and female. For large, open areas we would probably fly falcons. On some sites we fly more than one species of bird to provide maximum impact on the target species.
